favicon

UPDATED! If you are reading this page you are one of many people who are strugling to get their favicon work with Joomla.

Let me give you a promise: After reading this tutorial you will have your favicon installed and visible in under 5 minutes! Lets get started.

Select tutorial

First you need to select the right tutorial. There is a different procedure for Joomla 1.0 and Joomla 1.5. Those of you who are using Joomla 1.5 follow the first tutorial, and those of you with the old, 1.0 version go to the second.

If you are not sure which version you are using, log into your Joomla administration. Check out the photos below, 1.5 is on the left image with version number in top right corner, Joomla 1.0 is on the right image with version number in footer.

How to change favicon in Joomla 1.5

  1. Create your favicon and name it favicon.ico.
  2. Upload your new favicon.ico to your template folder. (templates/template_name/favicon.ico)

    Example

Fresh 1.5 joomla install uses default template called rhuk_milkyway. So path to favicon would look something like this in your FTP client: 0:/public_html/templates/rhuk_milkyway/

In web browser you would see the same icon on this address.
    http://www.yoursite.com/templates/rhuk_milkyway/favicon.ico

    Note:
Joomla 1.5 shows favicon of your current template. If you change your template, you also need to copy your favicon.ico in your new template.

  3. Open your web browser. Can you see the icon?

Troubleshooting

Browser Caching

If you followed the procedure and created favicon in correct format (.ico), named it favicon.ico and uploaded it into correct template folder it is installed correctly. But you might not see the favicon in your browser. We will fix that.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome shows changed favicons instantly. If you play around and change your favicon several times a minute and hit refresh (F5) it will show you current favicon instantly.

Mozilla Firefox 3.5

Mozilla Firefox 3.5 uses caching. Yes, all the tutorials online tell you to refresh the page, but no matter how many times you refresh it will not show you your current favicon. The key is to delete the browser cache and restart Firefox.

Internet Explorer 7

The same goes for IE 7. You need to delete cache and then restart browser.

Deleting browser cache

Follow this tutorial to delete browser cache in many popular web browsers.

Joomla Caching

If you have Joomla caching enabled, this could prevent you from seeing new favicon. Go to Global Configuration > System and disable caching. Refresh your page, delete browser cache and restart your browser.

How to change favicon in Joomla 1.0

  1. Create your favicon and name it favicon.ico.
  2. Upload your new favicon.ico to images folder. (images/favicon.ico)
  3. Open your web browser. Can you see the icon?

If you are having problems, follow the Troubleshooting section above!
